List of Symbols
Symbols that you can add to your questions using the WebAssign s: tag are listed in the following sections.
Perl Variables and Functions
Most question behaviors in WebAssign are controlled by variables or functions in Perl, a programming language. You do not need to learn Perl to write good questions in WebAssign using the documentation and examples. But, knowing some basics about Perl and how it is implemented in WebAssign questions lets you create more sophisticated questions that use randomized values, provide meaningful feedback based on your student's answers, or grade answers automatically in novel ways.
Set Up Personal Study Plan
To use a Personal Study Plan in your course, you must enable it for the course, set the plan options, and select the chapters and sections to be covered.
Use Your Own Resource Materials
You can copy images, media, and document files from your computer to WebAssign for use in your classes.
Points Adjustment
Use automatic points adjustment to provide incentives that encourage or discourage student behaviors—for example, guessing or procrastination. You can also make specific assignment questions count as extra credit.
Private Messages
You can use private messages to communicate with your students and other instructors or teaching assistants who are helping you with your class. With private messages, you can send messages to some or all of your students using your WebAssign class roster.

Question Feedback
After you submit a question, question part, or assignment, you usually receive feedback on your answers. This feedback might be a mark indicating whether or not you answered a question correctly, or it might include information to help you understand the problem. After the due date, you might see the answer key or a worked solution to the problem. Use this feedback as an opportunity to learn, and if you have more time and submissions, to change your answers on questions that you missed.
Sign-In Problems
Sometimes problems can occur when signing in to WebAssign.
Submit Your Answers
You must submit your answers to assignment questions to receive credit. How you submit answers depends on the Assignment Submission rule displayed at the top of your assignment.
Use WebAssign as a Student
Use Student View to experience WebAssign as a student. Switch to Student View when you create courses, set up Personal Study Plans, configure scoring and grading, schedule assignments, etc. to ensure that everything is working as you intended. This is also a great way to troubleshoot problems, like assignments not scoring correctly.
Access Study Tools in Cengage Read

Forums
Forums are for discussions with all of the members of your class. If your instructor creates a forum, you can then create topics within the forum or contribute to a current topic by posting a message.
Grant Manual Extension Requests
When your students request a manual extension within the assignment, you receive a manual extension request notification in WebAssign. You can grant the request and set the duration, penalty, and any extra submissions to allow for the extension.
Group Work
Group work helps both to foster working together and problem-solving skills, and to provoke discussion of the subject matter. Questions on group assignments should be more challenging than homework questions, and often require students to synthesize the concepts they have learned or to apply concepts in novel ways.

Reschedule Assignments
You can change dates for your scheduled assignments on the Reschedule Assignments page.
Rescore Assignments
Your students' work on assignments is scored automatically when they submit it using the assignment's Scoring Answers setting. This behavior ensures that your students' assignments are scored correctly based on the assignment your student completed. However, you might need to occasionally rescore an assignment. When an assignment's Scoring Answers setting is set to Last , you can rescore the assignment to use the best answer for each question part instead of scoring using the last submission. When an assignment's Scoring Answers setting is set to any value other than Last , you can only rescore the assignment using your current setting for the assignment.
Reuse Text with Quick Notes
If you use the same text repeatedly in your WebAssign communications — announcements, private messages, and responses to Ask Your Teacher messages or extension requests — you can simplify your work by using Quick Notes to store and insert text.
Schedule Page
Use the Schedule page to schedule assignments.
Score/GradeBook Problems
Sometimes, problems can happen with assignment scores or the WebAssign GradeBook.
View a Student's Answers for an Assignment
You can see a student's answers on an assignment if needed to review the student's work or respond if a student believes that a question has been scored incorrectly.
WebAssign in Science Labs
Although science labs are group activities by nature, your students should come to each lab having individually prepared by reading the assigned information about equipment, safety procedures, and the course materials. And, your students must individually be able to synthesize what they learned from the experiments performed with their lab groups. For this reason, the lab work for WebAssign is often best assigned in three parts: a pre-lab assignment, a group in-lab assignment, and a post-lab assignment.
Use Textbook Resource Materials
To use textbook resource materials, you must adopt a textbook for your course that includes resources when you create your course in WebAssign. To know if your selected textbook includes resources in WebAssign, look for the textbook resources icon below the textbook description when you are creating your course.
Google Classroom Troubleshooting
Sometimes problems can occur when syncing your course with Google Classroom.
Accessibility
Cengage is committed to making its educational materials accessible to users of all abilities. Through a dedicated company-wide task force, the assistance of outside experts and consultants, and feedback from users, Cengage continuously seeks to identify and evaluate opportunities for improving the usability and accessibility of our products and services.

Drop Students From a Course
You can drop a student from a course at any time. When you drop a student from a course, the student's information is not deleted from WebAssign. The student is added to the dropped roster list, and the work they completed is retained. How the student was added to the course, either through self-enrollment or uploading a roster, does not matter when dropping them from a course.
Edit Questions
Edit questions you created or questions that have been shared with you.
Make Notes About a Question
You can add a note to yourself in any question. Your note can be about anything; for example, you might remind yourself to use a specific formula.

Many questions have more than one part. Each part of a multiple-part question can be a different type of question — for example, fill-in-the-blank, multiple-choice, or mathPad.
My Class Insights
Homework scores — especially when multiple submissions are allowed — often don't indicate how well you understand the material. A better indicator is your performance on the first attempt for each question part. Class Insights uses this criterion to rate your proficiency on the assigned textbook topics. On the first attempt, you earned at least 90% of the points available. On the first attempt, you earned between 60% and 90% of the points available. On the first attempt, you earned less than...

Add Students from Google Classroom
Link your NGLSync course to your Google Classroom class to add students. Students access their course directly from Google Classroom and do not need to use a separate username and password.
Answering Numerical Questions That Check Significant Figures
Numerical questions that check significant figures require you both to calculate the correct answer and to specify that answer using the correct number of significant digits, for example, 2.3e4 to indicate 2 significant digits. The kind of answer that is expected should be clear from the question.
Archive Announcements
You can archive an announcement to remove it from your students' Home page, but still allow students to view the announcement if needed.

Create Polling Questions
You can configure one or more question parts as polling questions in order to grant students credit for any response. You can use polling questions to gather opinions from your students (as in a poll) or to record observational information, for example, the results of an experiment, when any response should be considered correct.
Deactivate a Course
If you created a course for practice, you can deactivate it to remove it from your current course list.
